There is another side to Glasgow today.
After the rioting by a minority group of unionists in Glasgow’s George Square last night, which shamed and embarrassed our wonderful country, a new scene showed its face today.
Several groups of people have now left over 100 bags with donations for Glasgow’s homeless food banks on George Square under peace flags. This is the Glasgow and Scotland that I know and love.
We will continue fighting for a better country. To bring an end to austerity, to food banks, to immoral, illegal nuclear weapons of mass destruction.

Now, this is the Glasgow I know and love!
YES!

Every country in uk is different. E.g. in scotland you get free higher education and in wales you get free prescriptions. You get neither in england. Scotland arent completely playing by the rules of the rest of uk

oh-glasgow:

THEN DON’T LET YOUR COUNTRY FUCK YOU OVER! THEY’RE PRIVATISING THE NHS BY THE BACK DOOR! FUCK!

If you are that concerned with that, they speak to the Green party or the save the NHS party. GET INVOLVED WITH IT ALL!

asks:
I wonder if Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire can just tell the feart 55% to piss off and go independent themselves. Dundee as well. Seriously, this is gutting. I'm not even Scot in any way. I'm from Singapore, and what Scotland is facing now is what Singapore faced 50 years ago, only we had no natural resources and it was the WORLD, not just UK, telling us we would fail, as we left Malaysia. Now we're richer than Malaysia. Bravehearts, where are they?

oh-glasgow:

You, my friend, have summed it up. You didn’t give in to fear and you ask a question that everyone else in the world will be asking.

asks:
I have a friend in Scotland and she and I have been talking about the independence vote for a while. Coming from the US I don't know nearly enough about it but what I had heard from her and the news was that Scotland didn't really have a plan for what would happen AFTER independence. My friends main concern were things like healthcare, power, education. She said if the vote came back Yes she'd probably have to move because Scotland would lose more than it gained. What are your thoughts on that?

oh-glasgow:

In England, they are privatising the NHS system and trying to turn into more of a US style of healthcare. You know, where you have remortgage your house just because you got sick and you have to pay for it. Ok, it’s not quite at that stage yet, but it is coming. I read only a while back that they were starting to charge for overnight stays in England. The Scottish government wanted to write it in as part of its constitution that healthcare was funded by the Scottish Government. How is that a concern?

Power? What, like oil or electricity? We’d have total control of the Scottish oil fields. We have the windiest country in Europe, and this would be an opportunity to focus on renewable energy for when the oil does run out. Oil will run out, but this isn’t a problem unique to Scotland, this is something that will be a problem for the rest of the world. It’s what we do with it while we have it that is the issue. And right now, and for the future, it’s being used to fund tax cuts for millionaires. Doubles all round!!

Education? The Scottish government want smaller class sizes. They want more teachers. They want affordable childcare. They want FREE university education, unlike in England where they have to pay around £9k per year for it.

I don’t wish to sound disparaging… but why on earth would you not want that? If your friend lives here and didn’t know about these things, why wouldn’t they have looked it up? Very strange.

asks:
Scotland voted no. The Scottish people decided for themselves what they want. Stop crying.

oh-glasgow:

They did indeed. 55% of us decided that they want another country to take decisions for us. If that’s not something to cry about, I don’t know what is.

Readers also said, "You don't know all the motives of the No voters. Instead of voting No out of fear, perhaps they did so because they thought things through and decided it was best." So you can't just paint them all as fearties.

oh-glasgow:

You’re right, I cannot. However, when the youth representing the future votes 71% yes, while the older, baby-boomer generation votes 73% no and represents the past, you’ve got to wonder why.

asks:
Before i get grief for saying this half of my family are Scottish, i know thats a poor excuse. But Scotland has its own parliment.... I couldnt afford to go to university, but my Scottish cousins got to go free of charge. The average person in England has £50 less disposable Income than Scottish. People in England are not better off than people in Scotland.

oh-glasgow:

Not free of charge, the Scottish government PAID the fees for them. That’s what we chose to do with our money. Westminster, on the other hand, thinks it’s better to go off and invade Iraq, renew nuclear weapons and build a long train line to nowhere. So, now that this has come to your attention, what are you going to do about it? For years, I thought that we were so politically apathetic in this country. This is YOUR chance to do something with England. Go out there and demand change. Real change will come by the people at the ballot box. You can make the difference here!
